So, you’re someone who is consistent at working out, and working out doesn’t feel like a chore anymore, instead, it’s a habit you’ve built over time. However, you have a vacation coming up soon and you’re worried that you won’t be able to get back to your usual workout routine when you get back. Sounds familiar? Don’t worry, happens to the most consistent of us.
Every summer, I struggle with the same issue: coming back from vacation and feeling super sluggish to get back to my normal workout routine. And after trying many things like slowing easing into my workout routine or even keeping up my workout routine during vacation (P.S. it never works!), I have found the perfect solution – and it’s to not break the habit of working out, even if it’s a few days off.
Realistically speaking, I would never sacrifice fun long summer nights for an early morning workout. That beats the entire purpose of taking some time off, which is to relax and have LOADS of fun. However, working out on vacation doesn’t have to be like working out on your normal days, it’s just to get your body moving and not to break a habit you’ve built for a long time.
To make it easier for you to get back to your workout routine when you return from vacation, follow these tips on how to workout on vacation.
1. Include any type of movement

Wherever you are: a new city, a beach resort, or even visiting your family, there are definitely activities you can do that include moving around. Take the opportunity to explore or join a group activity that includes movement – it’s a way to force yourself to do/see new things and to get some physical activity.
One of my favorite ways to stay active during vacation is to walk around instead of using transportation, if possible. It’s easy, convenient, can be done anywhere, and is for everyone, especially if you are someone who likes to just completely relax on vacation. You can search for groups (or go with your friends/family) for sightseeing, join a hiking group, or even swim more than just relaxing by the beach.
2. Adjust your sleep schedule (a tiny bit)
As I mentioned before, I would absolutely never sacrifice summer nights for an early workout and I’m still insisting on this, but there are days I could wake up (a little) earlier to get my body moving without missing out on any fun. It’s also great for when I come back and have to adjust to a normal sleeping schedule.
Whatever movement you decide on, walking around, a hotel gym, a swim, or even some yoga, including some movement in your day, will maintain a healthy sleep schedule so you’re keeping a healthy balance.
3. Consider short circuits
When we’re on vacation, our time is limited to fun and relaxation. So, instead of thinking that you should dedicate an entire hour that could be spent doing something more enjoyable, simply plan a few short circuits that you can do at any time to get your heart pumping. You can do things like burpees, jump squats, sit-ups, jumping jacks, push-ups, etc…
Blast your favorite playlist, do a few exercises for 5-10 minutes, and you’re done! You’ll feel like a million bucks afterward, and you didn’t miss out on any fun! It will even give you an endorphin boost to enjoy the rest of your day.
4. Join local classes

This one is if you’re really focused on your fitness during your vacation and looking for fun ways to get a sweat in. Scheduling a local class session is a great way to explore different classes (especially if you’re in a different country), and get to know what this spot has to offer other than the famous touristic places, and if you’re in the social butterfly mood, maybe you’ll make a few friends!
5. Don’t stress it out
The essence of vacation is relaxation and fun, always remember that. Whatever you eat, the number of steps walked, or the gains you’ve lost, you can get back on track when you get back. So, if you don’t feel like dedicating some time on vacation for fitness, then certainly don’t do it. Going on a long weekend without workout out won’t ruin your progress. It can even be a time for your body to recover and come back stronger.
Understand that being healthy is not just about how much your workout and your no-sugar streak, it’s about striking a balance and letting go of the things that ruin your health, whether on vacation or not. You know your body–does it need time to recover? If yes, then allow it to fully recover and come back rejuvenated and refreshed. There’s no guilt in doing so! When you come back, you can always get back to your workout routine.
